Real Madrid’s French footballer Karim Benzema, who won the Ballon d’Or award for the best footballer of the year, has announced his retirement from a tumultuous international career after losing to Argentina in the World Cup.
Karim Benzema has made 97 appearances for France and scored 37 goals, before being withdrawn from the World Cup squad ahead of their first match in Qatar after injuring his left leg in training.
The 35-year-old Real Madrid player made a surprise announcement on Twitter, saying, “I’ve made trials and mistakes, which is why I’m here today and I’m proud of it!”
Karima Benzema, who won the Ballon d’Or award for the best footballer of the year in October, was eager to play for France this year, having not been included in the team for the World Cup played in Russia 4 years ago. Went when France became the world champion.
Karim Benzema was ruled out of the France team for five-and-a-half years because of his ex-teammate Mathieu Valbuena’s involvement in a sex tape blackmail scandal.
He was sentenced to one year in prison and a fine of 75,000 euros in this case last year.
France coach Didier Deschamps decided not to call up his replacement in the squad for the Qatar World Cup, which included 23-year-old Kylian Mbappe.
France forward Mbappe won the ‘Golden Boot’ award after scoring eight goals at the World Cup, including a hat-trick in Sunday’s final against Argentina, which France lost on penalties in extra time. Both teams had 3-3 goals at the end.
Karim Benzema’s departure came just 3 days before the first match against Australia, a 1-4 win, a turning point for the former Lyon player. Karima Benzema injured his left thigh during training, requiring around three weeks to recover and rehabilitate.
However, his early departure from Qatar fueled speculation of a rift between him and the rest of the squad, as well as the France team manager.
