Dubai, UAE: UAE teachers, often described as “superhuman,” are being called to apply for the prestigious GEMS Education Global Teacher Prize, an international award that honors outstanding educators. The $1 million prize, launched by the Varkey Foundation in collaboration with UNESCO, is the largest award of its kind and aims to celebrate the transformative impact of teachers worldwide.
A Global Recognition for Transformative Educators
Since its inception in 2015, the GEMS Education Global Teacher Prize has received over 100,000 applications and nominations from educators around the world. The award recognizes those who go beyond traditional teaching roles, shaping not only the minds but also the futures of their students.
Honoring Passion and Dedication
The 2025 winner, Mansour bin Abdullah Al-Mansour, exemplifies the spirit of the award. He has profoundly impacted the lives of orphans and dedicates his free time to teaching inmates literacy skills. Speaking at the World Governments Summit in Dubai, he remarked:
“Every day across the UAE, teachers are using their superhuman powers to transform young lives. I encourage every inspiring educator to apply, and for parents and students to nominate those who make a lasting impact.”
An Opportunity for UAE’s Educators
Sunny Varkey, the visionary behind GEMS Education and the Global Teacher Prize, highlighted the role of education in tackling global challenges such as climate change, inequality, and technological transformation. He said:
“This prize was created to showcase how vital teachers are in shaping a better future. UAE educators should step forward and be part of this global movement.”
UNESCO’s Stefania Giannini echoed this sentiment, stating that in today’s rapidly evolving world, investing in teachers is critical to building an inclusive and sustainable society.
UAE’s Track Record of Excellence
UAE teachers have a notable history with the prize. In 2025, Moza Mohammed Rashid Saadan Al-Hafiti of Dibba Al Fujairah ranked among the top 50. Similarly, Riadh Zammali from Abu Dhabi’s Ghayathi Centre for Special Needs made the top 50 in 2021. These achievements highlight the country’s dedication to excellence in education.
