That Memorable Night

by: Fiza Noor:
That day. It remained a wonderful memory in my mind till this day. I was five years old, and on that day I was turning six years old. YES, it was my 6th birthday. All the small things that happened on that day became big memories today. That day I enjoyed it so much that its memory is still intact in my memory like it was yesterday. Birthdays are special occasions that mark the passing of another year in one’s life.

It is a time for celebration, reflection, and gratitude. Amongst all the birthdays I have celebrated, one stands out as the best birthday I have ever had. It was a day filled with joy, surprises, and unforgettable memories. My birthday is on the 1st of December whereas my elder brother’s (Fahad) birthday is on the 16th of December. We are only fifteen days apart, and we have always celebrated our birthdays separately with our day. But it wasn’t until that day it no longer happened like that.

The day began with my parents waking me up with a big smile on their faces. They had planned a surprise party for me, inviting all my friends and family members. Most of the day I was out with one of my uncles, and there at home, all of my uncles and aunts were busy decorating the whole house. From the fan to the walls, the kitchen, the sofas, and of course they also filled the room with balloons and the walls with various kinds of decoration.

It was a wonderful view and pretty, all their effort that they had done that day were visible in that room where most of the decorations were done and the cake cutting was going to be. Yet the biggest surprise wasn’t that they were throwing a surprise birthday party for me, the biggest surprise was yet to come.

After I came home with my uncle, they tried their best to hide me from the decorated place so I wouldn’t find out, but of course, I had a glimpse of the place, and trust me it was a spectacular view. Then my mom took me out shopping and bought a lot of things at the end of the day; I realized that shopping was my birthday gift. When we went back home it was already late at night and everyone was waiting for me to come so they could surprise.

When we reached home all the lights were closed and it was silent then suddenly there was light everywhere and everyone was singing ‘Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you’ for a while BUT wait what I saw them holding TWO cakes! At first, I thought maybe they bought two cakes for me. As soon as I looked to my left, I saw my brother standing with me and the attention was on both of us, that was the moment I realized the real surprise was us celebrating our birthday together.

That may sound silly to me now but back then that day was my special day and having to share it with my brother was never something I wanted. The party still went on with both of us going to the table to cut the cake. Our family didn’t like to put candles on the cakes so we would put them separately in a bowl to blow them and then we both blew the same candles at once.

Then we had some food and we took a lot of pictures, the adults were taking their pictures then of us, the birthday Boy and Girl. To add to my delight, there were numerous games and activities organized for us kids. We played musical chairs, and ludo and even had a mini treasure hunt in our backyard. The laughter and cheers echoed throughout the day.

Then it was finally time for the PRESENTS everyone’s favorite part of birthdays. Each gift brought immense joy to my heart as I unwrapped them one by one. From toys to books to clothes – everything seemed perfect. And of course, our dear mother had bought us the same gift, that big bouncy ball on which we could sit and bounce on it. And the gifts from the rest of the relatives.

As the day draws to a close, the birthday child (me and my brother) is surrounded by all their loved ones. They are showered with hugs and kisses, letting them know how much they are loved and cherished. The day may have come to an end, but the memories created on this best 6th birthday will forever hold a special place in their heart.

It was finally over then the whole night when I was supposed to sleep, I was looking at my presents, the pictures we took and the day I shared with my brother I slowly came to realize that it wasn’t as bad as I thought I enjoyed the day with him, and I also regretted giving him the silent treatment. Well, what should I have done? I didn’t like the fact that I was going to share my birthday with him, but now I do.

In conclusion, my 6th birthday will forever remain etched in my memory as the best birthday ever. It was a day filled with love, jealousy, laughter, surprises, and unforgettable moments shared with family and friends – truly a celebration of life itself! And I also learned that we should be grateful for the moments we are living in because when you grow up you might not live the same day again.

Now I love to share my special day with my brother but he doesn’t like to celebrate his birthdays anymore. So, we should always try to understand the situation and make the best memories out of them. Looking back at that special day brings warmth to my heart even now. It taught me that birthdays are not just about receiving gifts but also about celebrating love and creating cherished memories with loved ones. And I am glad that I was able to share this wonderful memory with my brother.
