The 50th Anniversary of Great October War Victory 1973

On Friday 6th, October 2023, Egyptian Diplomats, Personnel from Armed forces of Egypt, Pakistan and Friendly countries of Egypt attended the event to mark the 50th Anniversary of Great October War victory – Egyptian Armed Force Day held at Sheesh Mahal Hall, Serena Hotel Islamabad.

Mr. Anwar Ali Haider, Minister of Defence and Defence Production, graced the ceremony as the Chief Guest. Additionally, Mr. Abdul Moeed Khan, Air Marshal, Pakistan Air Force, Sarfraz Ahmad, Air Vice Marshall, Pakistan Air Force, Mr. Shafqat Hussain, Rear Admiral (DCNS) Project, Pakistan Navy, Maj Gen. Agha Masood, Maj Gen. Imran Ullah, , Brigadier Waqar Salim Cheema, Mr. Ovais Ali Khokhar, CEO House of Elaan and Ovaisco Group, Mr. Zaildar Ahsan Shah Managing Director Elaan Research Centre, and Mr. Khalid Taimur Akram Executive Director, Elaan Research Centre, members of Armed Forces of Pakistan, Business Community of Pakistan and Friends of Egypt were also in attendance at this significant event.

The year 1973 marked a historic turning point in the modern history of Egypt and the broader Middle East. The Arab-Israeli conflict, which had simmered for years, erupted into a full-scale war in October of that year. This conflict, known as the the October War, saw Egypt’s armed forces engage in a strategic and daring offensive against Israel.

Egypt’s ultimate victory in this war not only reshaped the political dynamics of the region but also had far-reaching implications for the pursuit of peace and the quest for justice. Egypt had long sought to regain the Sinai Peninsula, which had been occupied by Israel since the Six-Day War of 1967. President Anwar Sadat, who had come to power in 1970, was determined to recover this territory and restore Egyptian pride.

The opportunity to do so came on October 6, 1973, when Egypt, launched a surprise attack on Israel, timed to coincide with the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. Egypt’s victory in the Yom Kippur War was a defining moment in the nation’s history. It not only recovered territory but also restored Egyptian pride and confidence. This victory continues to be celebrated as a symbol of resilience and diplomacy in a turbulent region.

Brigadier General Mohammad Saad, Defence Attaché at the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt, extended a warm welcome and greeted the distinguished guest at the Sheesh Mahal Hall, Serena Hotel Islamabad. The event saw the presence of Galaxy of Diplomats, Ambassadors, Defence Attaché and Deputy of Head of Missions were also gathered to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Great October War victory.

Brigadier General Mohammad Saad, Defence Attaché at the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and Mr. Tarek Dahroug, Ambassador of Egypt to Pakistan extended a warm welcome to the Chief Guest, Mr. Anwar Ali Haider, the Minister of Defence and Defence Production, at the elegant Sheesh Mahal within Serena Hotel Islamabad. During the event, Brigadier General Mohammad Saad had the honor of presenting shields to the chief guest.

Following this, Mr. Anwar Ali Haider graciously penned his remarks in the comments book. Mr. Anwar Ali Haider took a moment to explore the foyer of Sheesh Mahal, where a corner was dedicated to showcasing fascinating Egyptian artifacts. This exhibition of Egyptian archaeological history captivated many guests, allowing them to appreciate the rich heritage before entering the main hall.

The ceremony commenced with the playing of the national anthems of both Egypt and Pakistan. Brigadier General Mohammad Saad, Defence Attaché at the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt, delivered a welcome address to the esteemed guests and attendees. In his speech, he extended a warm welcome and expressed gratitude to the Chief Guest and the other distinguished guests representing various nations.

Brigadier General Saad paid heartfelt tribute to the courageous soldiers of the armed forces who made the ultimate sacrifice during the ‘October war’ against Israel. He emphasized the valor and bravery displayed by these soldiers and their dedication to safeguarding their nation. Their sacrifices, he noted, were made to secure a peaceful and prosperous future for generations to come.

Furthermore, Brigadier General Mohammad Saad expressed gratitude towards the Coalition forces that participated in the war, acknowledging their valuable support. He also extended his appreciation to the Pakistan Armed Forces for their vital role in providing training and essential war equipment to the Egyptian Armed Forces.

In closing, he emphasized the commitment of Egypt and its friendly nations to collaborate in tackling terrorism and addressing economic and social challenges, highlighting the importance of mutual cooperation in achieving these goals.

He underscored the longstanding friendship between Pakistan and Egypt, noting that their relations continue to strengthen over time.

Mr. Anwar Ali Haider highlighted the multifaceted collaboration between the two nations, encompassing trade, diplomacy, culture, healthcare, education, and investments. Additionally, he emphasized their joint efforts within the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to support matters related to Palestine and Kashmir. He concluded by expressing hope that, under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the relationship between the two nations would grow even stronger in the future.

The conclusion of the ceremony featured the screening of a documentary, which served as a tribute to the courageous soldiers of the Egypt Armed Forces. The documentary also showcased the rich culture, history, archaeological sites, art, and picturesque landscapes of Egypt.

Following the speeches, the gathering transitioned to the patio and foyer area, where an extensive spread awaited the guests. The culinary offerings were impressive, featuring a wide array of Pakistani dishes and Egyptian delicacies, all set out to delight and satisfy the honored guests.
