JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia is set to make a bold entry into the world of cricket with the launch of its own professional cricket league and plans for significant international cricket investments in collaboration with the Public Investment Fund (PIF), according to the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation (SACF).
The ambitious plans also include the development of world-class cricket stadiums in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Yanbu, marking a transformative step for the sport in the Kingdom.
The announcement came as Saudi Arabia hosted the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction for the first time, a historic event that saw top players signing contracts for teams in India’s globally renowned T20 league.
Speaking at the Abadi Al-Johar Arena in Jeddah, SACF Chairman Prince Saud bin Mishal Al-Saud outlined the federation’s vision for the future of cricket in the Kingdom.
“Plans are underway to enter into international investments in cooperation with the Saudi Public Investment Fund, supporting our shared ambition to grow cricket at every level in Saudi Arabia,” Prince Saud said. “One of the most important initiatives is to create our own professional league, setting us on the path to making cricket a major sport in the Kingdom.”
He emphasized the significance of developing infrastructure as part of this vision: “Our strategy includes building world-class facilities in Riyadh, Yanbu, and Jeddah, which will serve as a foundation for the sport’s growth.”

With the full support of our government, we are sending a strong message about the Kingdom’s commitment to developing cricket and positioning Saudi Arabia as a global hub for major sporting events.”
The two-day auction, held at the Abadi Al-Johar Arena, featured 574 players vying for spots across the IPL’s 10 franchises, including global heavyweights like the Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders. The finalized squads will be announced as the IPL gears up for its 18th season starting in March next year.
A Vision for the Future: Prince Saud also hinted at exciting developments on the horizon: “There are many plans in the pipeline, and we remain determined to achieve our ambitious goals. We look forward to working with our partners to bring this vision to life.”
