The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended the Sri Lankan Cricket Board’s membership with immediate effect.

by: TN Media News Riyadh:
A statement issued by the ICC on Friday said that the Sri Lankan Cricket Board grossly breached its obligations as a member and did not stop government interference in the board’s affairs.

The statement added that the Sri Lankan Cricket Board has failed to ensure that the affairs of the board are run independently without any government interference.

The suspension of the cricket board by the ICC has come at a time when the Sri Lankan cricket team has returned to their country after being eliminated from the World Cup.

The Sri Lankan team played nine matches in the World Cup, out of which they could win only two matches, after which the doors of the Champions Trophy have also been closed for the team.

After Sri Lanka’s poor performance in the World Cup, the sports minister of the country had dismissed all the officials of the cricket board, but later a Sri Lankan court overturned this decision and reinstated the cricket board.

The chief selector of the Sri Lankan cricket team, Pramodya Wickremesinghe, said that his team’s poor performance in the World Cup was the result of a ‘conspiracy from outside’.

According to NDTV, speaking to reporters at the airport on Friday, Pramodya Wickramasinghe said, “Give me two days and I will tell everything about it.” This (poor performance in the World Cup) is the result of a conspiracy from outside.

Cricket World Cup echoes were also heard in Sri Lanka’s parliament on Thursday when government and opposition members tabled a resolution calling for the resignation of the Sri Lankan Cricket Board administration.
