ICC Confirms Hybrid Format Amid Security Concerns:
The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy will begin on February 19, with Pakistan facing New Zealand in the tournament opener in Karachi. The International Cricket Council (ICC) officially announced the full schedule on Tuesday, ending weeks of anticipation.
A major highlight of the group stage is the much-anticipated Pakistan vs India clash, scheduled for February 23 in Dubai. This decision comes in response to India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan, citing security concerns. As a result, the ICC adopted a hybrid model for the tournament.
Match Distribution Across Pakistan and the UAE:
While Pakistan is the official host, a minimum of 10 matches will be held in Rawalpindi, Karachi, and Lahore. However, all of India’s Group A matches against Pakistan, Bangladesh, and New Zealand—as well as any potential semifinals and the final, will take place in Dubai.
In Group B, teams from Australia, England, South Africa, and Afghanistan will play all their matches in Pakistan.
ICC Chair Jay Shah expressed enthusiasm over the tournament’s return:
“This edition blends cricketing heritage with modern hosting. Fans can expect 15 thrilling matches across two vibrant venues.”
A Historic Milestone for Pakistan Cricket
This event marks Pakistan’s first global cricket tournament since it co-hosted the 1996 World Cup. It is seen as a major step forward in re-establishing the country as a reliable host for international cricket.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi welcomed the decision:
“This is a landmark moment. The agreement reflects mutual respect and cooperation. We are ready to deliver a world-class tournament.”
Bilateral Stand-Off and Future Hosting Arrangements:
In a related move, the ICC confirmed that Pakistan will not tour India during the current 2024–27 cycle. Instead, any matches involving India and Pakistan will be played at neutral venues, including upcoming ICC events hosted by India.
As part of this understanding, Pakistan has been awarded hosting rights for the 2028 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, a first for the nation.
Countdown to Cricket’s Biggest Rivalry:
The tournament will feature eight teams competing for the prestigious white jackets. While the event begins in Pakistan, the spotlight will be on Dubai, where India and Pakistan face off in what is expected to be the most-watched match of the tournament.
As cricket fans across the globe count down to February 2025, the Champions Trophy promises high-stakes matches, historic moments, and a renewed celebration of the sport’s global appeal.
