Cricket has long been a unifying force among expatriates in Saudi Arabia, particularly those from South Asia. Despite limited opportunities for entertainment, these communities have found solace and joy in the game, often playing on weekends and public holidays in parks and open spaces.

However, the landscape of cricket in Saudi Arabia is rapidly changing, thanks to the efforts of the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation (SACF). Established in 2020, the SACF has been instrumental in promoting cricket among Saudis and expatriates alike, with the aim of developing a competitive national cricket team.

Under the leadership of Prince Saud bin Mishal Al-Saud, the SACF has introduced a series of initiatives to boost the sport’s popularity. One such initiative is the National Cricket Championship, the largest tournament of its kind in Saudi Arabia. This championship has not only provided a platform for local talent but has also raised the profile of cricket in the country.

Expatriates from countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan have been actively involved in promoting the game. Mohammed Azimooddin Abdul Rahiman Karajagi, an ICC-certified curator, umpire, and head coach of the Riyadh Cricket Association, praised the SACF’s efforts in developing cricket in the Kingdom. He highlighted the success of the Saudi national cricket team, which has achieved consecutive victories in the ACC Men’s Challenger Cup.

Despite challenges such as the lack of access to cricket gear and the absence of grassy pitches, expatriates remain enthusiastic about the sport. They see the SACF’s initiatives, including plans for professional cricket academies and turf wickets, as a positive step towards further growth.

The SACF’s efforts have attracted attention from high-profile figures in the cricketing world, including Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Irfan Pathan, and Kevin Pietersen. Their visits to Riyadh to support and share their expertise with the SACF underscore the growing interest and potential of cricket in Saudi Arabia.

As cricket continues to gain popularity in the Kingdom, the passion and dedication of expatriates serve as a testament to the sport’s universal appeal. With the SACF’s visionary leadership and the support of cricket enthusiasts, Saudi Arabia is poised to become a significant player in the world of cricket.
