Kyrgyzstan’s Culture and History Forge Path to Innovation: Kyrgyzstan’s rich culture and history blend with its modern developments, particularly in the realm of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI). With a growing focus on urbanization and modernization, the nation is embracing the challenges of the 21st century by leveraging its natural potential for scientific and technical problem-solving. As the world moves towards digitalization, Kyrgyzstan is striving to close the digital gap and integrate into the global economy sustainably.
Government and Entrepreneurial Initiatives Drive Innovation: In recent years, Kyrgyzstan has made significant strides in advancing its STI capabilities. In 2016, the country, along with other Eurasian Financial Union (EEU) members, endorsed a plan to boost GDP and create jobs in the ICT sector. President Sooronbay Jeenbekov’s National Development Vision 2040 (NSUR-2040) focuses on human capital development and digital transformation through the “Taza Koom” (Transparent Society) program. This digitalization effort aims to accelerate economic growth and improve living standards by integrating innovative technologies into key sectors like energy, agriculture, industry, and services.
Digitalization for Economic Growth and Global Integration: The “Sanarip Kyrgyzstan” (Digital Kyrgyzstan) program, launched in 2018, aims to create a transparent state and a knowledge-based economy. It emphasizes ICT and IT as key drivers for national development. The government is also focusing on digitalizing industry value chains, particularly in sectors like mining, to improve productivity and efficiency. Additionally, the digitalization of the energy sector is expected to pave the way for “smart energy” solutions, further enhancing efficiency and reducing energy loss.
Future Prospects and Development Goals: Kyrgyzstan’s strategic location on the Modern Silk Road underscores the importance of embracing digitalization and innovative technologies. The government is keen on leveraging blockchain-enabled smart contracts for digital traceability in international trade. In sectors like agriculture and light industries, the adoption of IoT, automated machinery, and drones is expected to provide decision-makers with valuable data for better strategic decisions.
Supporting Innovation through Policy and Infrastructure: To support innovation, the government has established the National Fund of Science and other STI management structures. It has also introduced tax credits for research and development (R&D) activities, encouraging innovation in various industries. Efforts are underway to develop a concept for nurturing innovative businesses, which will further stimulate innovation and economic growth in the country.
Kyrgyzstan’s journey towards becoming a successful innovative center in Central Asia is well underway. With smart actions, partnerships, and investments, the country is poised to capitalize on its STI potential and shape a prosperous future for its citizens.
