The UK announces a reduction in legal immigrants and a hike in the minimum wage for skilled workers.
Prime Minister Rishi Sonak is determined to address the issue, but businesses and trade unions criticize the move, anticipating challenges for the private sector and public health due to existing workforce shortages.
Recent data reveals a record 745,000 immigrants in 2022, mainly from India, Nigeria, and China. Home Secretary James Cleverly anticipates the measures could cut migrants to 300,000.
While Sonak acknowledges increased immigration, the government also raises minimum wages for skilled workers. However, health and social workers are exempt.
Other measures include restricting foreign health workers’ family entry, a 66% hike in immigrant health service co-payments, and a raised income threshold for family visa applications.
The government’s actions may spark conflicts with businesses already grappling with workforce recruitment challenges.
