Democracy and Unity Day held at the Turkish Embassy in Islamabad.

Mr. Khalid Taimur Akram, Executive Director, Pakistan Research Center for a Community with Shared Future participated as a keynote speaker in the commemoration ceremony for the martyred on July 15, 2016, thwarted coup attempted by FETO & Democracy and Unity Day held at the Turkish Embassy in Islamabad.

On 15th July 2022, Mr. Khalid Taimur Akram, Executive Director, Pakistan Research Center for a Community with Shared Future participated as a keynote speaker in the commemoration ceremony for the martyred of July 15, 2016, thwarted coup attempted by the Fethullah Gulen Terrorist Organization (FETO) & Democracy and Unity Day held. The ceremony was held at the Turkish Embassy in Islamabad. His Excellency Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Speaker, National Assembly graced the ceremony as the Chief Guest.

Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Speaker, National Assembly and Chief Guest of the ceremony highlighted that the Turkish people have played a historic role in defending peace, stability and democratic institutions. They showcased the characteristics of resilience and legendary bravery to defy the forces of darkness. He also stated that the people of Pakistan have always taken pride in Turkey’s progress.

While addressing the audience, Mr. Khalid Taimur Akram, Executive Director, Pakistan Research Center for a Community with Shared Future stated that memories of  Shuhada’s courage and bravery are still fresh and will continue to be in everyone’s minds for years to come. On July 15, 2016, a coup attempt aiming to topple the democratic government, however, failed within hours and etched far-reaching consequences into its society and politics.

He stated that Pakistan firmly stands alongside its strongest ally, Turkey. We are together with the Turkish population to pay tribute to the heroes who embraced martyrdom for the security and stability of their state. He praised the determination and willpower projected by the people of Turkiye which is an inspiration for many around the world.

H.E Dr. Mehmet Pacaci, Ambassador of the Turkish Embassy to Pakistan stated that the resistance of the Turkish people became the symbolistic case of the nonviolent struggle against tyranny. That night a dangerous segment of the organization FETO was defeated by the people. He explained that despite the traumatic experience, the Turkish people decided to move on. The economy did not suffer any major shock. He explained that the martyrs of the coup cannot be forgotten. Their bravery and sacrifice will be remembered for years to come.

The ceremony included leading experts, media personnel, government institutions, and diplomatic corps.
