In a commanding performance at the Women’s Asia Cup 2024, Sri Lanka cruised to a dominant 10-wicket victory over Thailand, securing their place in the semifinals against Pakistan.
Sri Lanka’s bowlers, led by Chamari Athapaththu and Kavisha Dilhari, restricted Thailand to a modest 93/7 in their 20 overs. Despite Nannapat Koncharoenkai’s resilient unbeaten 47 off 53 balls, Thailand struggled as wickets fell regularly around her. Athapaththu and Dilhari were the standout performers with the ball, taking 1/15 and 2/13 respectively.
Chasing a target of 94, Sri Lanka’s openers, Vishmi Gunaratne and Athapaththu, made light work of the task. The pair reached the target with ease, finishing at 94/0 in just 11.3 overs. Gunaratne scored a steady 39 off 34 balls, while Athapaththu dazzled with 49 not out off 35 balls, including 4 sixes and 2 fours. Their unbeaten partnership ensured Sri Lanka’s emphatic victory with 51 balls to spare.
Athapaththu’s all-round brilliance earned her the Player of the Match award. This win not only reinforces Sri Lanka Women’s strong form in the tournament but also sets up an exciting semifinal clash against Pakistan.
