Disciplinary Action Taken: Ben Cutting (Peshawar Zalmi) and Sohail Tanvir (Quetta Gladiators) have been fined 15% of their match fees for making obscene gestures during a Pakistan Super League (PSL) match. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the fines in an official statement, citing violations of the PSL Code of Conduct.
Nature of the Offence:The incidents occurred during separate moments in the same match. Cutting made an offensive gesture after hitting three consecutive sixes in the penultimate over. In response, Tanvir made a similar gesture after catching Cutting on the first ball of the final over.
According to the PCB, both players breached Article 2.6 of the PSL Code of Conduct, which prohibits “using a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during a PSL match.”
No Formal Hearing Required: Both players admitted guilt and accepted the sanctions. As a result, a formal hearing was not needed. The decision was overseen by match referee Ali Naqvi, with charges laid by on-field umpires Michael Gough and Rashid Riaz, third umpire Asif Yaqoob, and fourth umpire Waleed Yaqoob.
Context and Reaction: Following the heated exchange on the field, match referee Naqvi emphasized the importance of professionalism. “Such gestures have no space in this great sport,” he said. “Players must remember their responsibilities as role models. This behavior sends the wrong message to young cricketers.”
He added that while competitive spirit is encouraged, actions must stay within the boundaries of sportsmanship.
Code of Conduct Guidelines: Level 1 offences, as per PSL regulations, carry penalties ranging from an official warning to a fine of up to 25% of the match fee. Both Cutting and Tanvir were treated under this framework as first-time offenders.
Conclusion: The PSL has been largely celebrated for its competitive yet respectful atmosphere. Incidents like this serve as a reminder of the importance of discipline, even in high-pressure moments. The PCB has reiterated its commitment to maintaining the spirit of the game.
