JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia: Pakistan’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Ahmad Farooq, described the Pakistan-Saudi Arabia relationship as “higher than the Himalayas and deeper than the oceans.” He spoke during a press conference at the Pakistan Consulate in Jeddah, highlighting the Kingdom’s consistent support during times of war and economic hardship.
Prisoner Transfer Agreement Now in Effect
Ambassador Farooq announced that the long-awaited prisoner transfer agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia is now operational. Under this agreement, Pakistani prisoners in Saudi jails can return home to serve the rest of their sentences.
“A few prisoners have already been transferred,” he confirmed.
He also shared a key concern: about 60% of Pakistani inmates in Saudi Arabia are imprisoned for drug-related crimes. Most entered on temporary visas. He emphasized the need for public awareness to prevent such cases and urged families and communities to stay informed.
Growing Trade and Economic Ties
The ambassador also shared positive updates on trade relations. Several bilateral agreements have recently been signed to strengthen economic cooperation.
He encouraged Pakistani entrepreneurs to explore new opportunities in Saudi Arabia’s growing market. “This is the time to boost exports and expand our economic footprint,” he noted.
Supporting Overseas Pakistanis
Ambassador Farooq reassured the public that the welfare of overseas Pakistanis remains a top priority. He said the Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate in Jeddah are both providing full legal and consular support to the Pakistani community.
He also announced progress on a major infrastructure project. The new Consulate building in Jeddah is 50% complete, and its opening is expected soon. This new facility will offer modern services and better access for the public.
Remarks from the Consul General
Consul General Khalid Majid also addressed the media. He echoed the ambassador’s remarks and highlighted the consulate’s commitment to providing efficient services and community support.
The press conference reflected Pakistan’s focus on strengthening diplomatic, legal, and economic ties with Saudi Arabia while prioritizing the needs of its people living abroad.
