by: TN Media News Pakistan:
On May 20, 2024, Cameroon will celebrate the 52nd anniversary of the advent of the Unitary State, a significant milestone under the theme: “Army and Nation, Together for a United, Peaceful, and Prosperous Cameroon.” This celebration underscores the synergy between the Cameroonian nation and its army, highlighting the country’s commitment to unity, peace, and progress.

Synergy Between Army and Citizens: This year’s National Day offers Cameroonians a platform to reaffirm their dedication to the nation’s unity, peace, and stability. For over five years, security threats in the Far North region by Boko Haram and in the North West and South West regions by English-speaking separatists have posed significant challenges. In response, President Paul Biya has implemented numerous measures to enhance security and protect citizens.

Through the collaborative efforts of the population and defense forces, significant improvements have been made in these regions. The government has introduced special programs for the reconstruction of affected areas, encouraging armed groups to disarm and reintegrate into society. These efforts have paved the way for peaceful development and reinforced the nation’s resilience and unity.

Economic and Social Progress: In 2023, Cameroon’s non-oil sector growth rate was estimated at 3.9%, with government measures helping to control inflation, stabilizing it at around 6.7%. Multiple projects were launched to meet the aspirations of the population and improve their well-being. Efforts to improve the business climate aim to attract foreign investment and bolster a robust private sector, essential for the country’s emergence.

National Day Celebrations: May 20th is a public holiday in Cameroon, known as “National Unity Day.” Celebrations include a civilian parade and a presidential speech, culminating in an impressive military parade. These activities promote unity and highlight the collaboration between the forces of law and order and the population.

Historical Significance: Cameroon’s National Day marks the birth of the United Republic of Cameroon. On May 20, 1972, a referendum led by the first President, Ahmadou Ahidjo, resulted in the unification of Anglophone and Francophone regions, transitioning from a federal to a unitary state. This day replaced January 1st, the previous independence day, commemorating the country’s unity and progress. The national flag was also updated to symbolize this unity, featuring three vertical stripes of green, red, and yellow with one yellow star on red.

Cameroon: A Land of Opportunities: Nicknamed “Africa in miniature,” Cameroon is renowned for its cultural diversity and varied climates, ecosystems, and reliefs. Home to the oldest forest in Africa, the 60-million-year-old Korup National Park, and one of the wettest places on Earth, the village of Debundja, Cameroon boasts a rich natural heritage.

With a strategic geographical position in Central Africa within the Gulf of Guinea, Cameroon has a liberal economy and a young, dynamic population. The government focuses on expanding educational institutions, developing rural areas, and promoting industrialization. The economy relies on the sale of basic products like oil and cocoa.

Bilateral Ties with Saudi Arabia: Since establishing relations in 1966, Cameroon and Saudi Arabia have enjoyed strong bilateral ties. Recent advancements include a 2017 air agreement and ongoing cooperation in various sectors. Saudi Arabia has supported Cameroon with infrastructure projects, such as the Great Mosque of Maroua and the Tsinga Islamic Complex in Yaoundé.

Cameroon appreciates Saudi Arabia’s humanitarian aid and medical missions, which have significantly impacted refugee support and health services. The solid friendship between the two nations is further exemplified by shared views on international issues and joint efforts in the fight against terrorism.

Conclusion: As Cameroon celebrates National Day, it reflects on the achievements of unity and progress over the past 52 years. The synergy between the army and citizens, economic resilience, and strong international partnerships underscore the nation’s commitment to a united, peaceful, and prosperous future
