US Embassy in India Issues Advisory Amid Trump Administration’s Immigration Crackdown.

New Delhi Staff Report: In light of the Trump administration’s intensified crackdown on illegal immigration, the U.S. Embassy in India has issued a strong advisory warning Indian citizens of the risks of overstaying their U.S. visas. The embassy emphasized that individuals who remain in the United States beyond their authorized period could be deported and potentially face a permanent ban on future travel to the U.S.

The advisory applies to all Indian nationals traveling on time-bound visas such as work, student, or tourist visas. “If you remain in the United States beyond your authorized period of stay, you could be deported and could face a permanent ban on traveling to the United States in the future,” the embassy stated.

Immigration enforcement remains one of the most polarizing issues of former President Donald Trump’s policy agenda. From his first executive order, which controversially targeted the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment, Trump has taken a hardline stance. While some measures are facing legal challenges, federal agencies continue to ramp up deportations, detain visa violators, and promote self-deportation strategies.

A new rule now requires all foreign nationals staying in the U.S. for more than 30 days to register with federal authorities, adding another layer of scrutiny for visa holders.

Two recent high-profile deportation cases involving Indian nationals have brought further attention to the policy shift. Ranjani Srinivasan, a PhD student at Columbia University, fled to Canada after her U.S. visa was revoked amid allegations of participation in a pro-Palestine protest—claims she denies. Homeland Security officials cited her case as an example of self-deportation.

In another case, Badar Khan Suri, a Georgetown University scholar, was arrested over alleged ties to Hamas through his family. He was later released after a court found insufficient evidence of any national security threat.

As the U.S. tightens immigration enforcement, Indian travelers and visa holders are being urged to strictly adhere to visa conditions and stay durations to avoid severe consequences.
