Harassment Allegations at Sindh Madressatul Islam University Spark Concerns Over Delayed Justice.

by: Abdul Rahim Khan Ghouri: A serious case of harassment at Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) has raised alarm and concern within the academic community, as delays in justice continue to persist despite clear findings from investigative committees.

A female professor from the Department of Environmental Science filed a harassment complaint several months ago against Assistant Professor Abdul Majeed Pirzada. The complaint, formally submitted to the university’s Vice Chancellor, led to the formation of multiple inquiry committees. According to sources, at least two of these committees confirmed the allegations and recommended significant disciplinary action. However, the university administration has yet to act.

In her latest letter to the Vice Chancellor, the female professor expressed frustration over the continued delays. “Why is justice being delayed, even after the committees have completed their investigations and confirmed the charges?” she questioned. She further revealed that she has been repeatedly summoned to recount her experience, and alleges that political pressure is being exerted to suppress the matter.

I appeal to Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, and Sindh Education Minister to take strict notice of this case,” the professor stated, warning that inaction may encourage similar incidents in academic institutions across the province.

A copy of a show-cause notice shared with press agencies confirms that the university’s internal inquiries found Professor Pirzada guilty of harassment, recommending major penalties. Yet, no formal action has been taken.

The case has sparked a wider debate on the effectiveness of internal grievance mechanisms in universities, especially in cases involving female staff. “Incidents of harassment in educational institutions continue because of such delays and lack of accountability,” the professor warned, adding that she remains determined to pursue justice not only for herself but to protect others from similar abuse.

As the academic community and rights activists await action, the spotlight is now on Sindh’s higher authorities to ensure that justice is delivered without further delay.
