Fakhar Zaman Returns for Champions Trophy 2025:

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced its squad for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 and the preceding tri-nation series. A key highlight is the return of Fakhar Zaman as the sole specialist opener, marking his comeback since the 2023 ICC World Cup in India.

Fakhar replaces Saim Ayub, who missed selection due to an ankle injury. Abdullah Shafique was also left out after a string of underwhelming performances.

Opening Slot Strategy Still Unclear

Addressing media concerns, chief selector Asad Shafiq outlined the possible opening combinations. He confirmed that either Babar Azam or Saud Shakeel may partner Fakhar, depending on match conditions and opposition.

“Fakhar’s aggressive style is a major asset. We will assess who partners him based on game-day strategies,” Shafiq stated.

Babar has experience opening in T20Is and showed promise in the Cape Town Test, scoring two half-centuries in Saim’s absence. Saud, on the other hand, has built a reputation as a smart and consistent run-getter in Test cricket, especially on home pitches.

Squad Focused on Balance and Experience

The selected 15-member squad features a mix of experienced batters, utility players, and fast bowlers. Mohammad Rizwan has been named captain, with Salman Ali Agha as vice-captain.
